Meet the New American Sweatshop
Brave New Films developed a new media public education campaign to fight for carwash workers’ health and safety while on the job. We partnered with the CLEAN Carwash Campaign to raise public awareness bout workplace health and safety that low-wage, immigrant workers of color face in California’s carwash industry. Carwash workers across the state are routinely exploited. They suffer poor health environs that result in severe kidney damage, respiratory problems, and nerve deterioration from working conditions.
The 10,000 carwasheros in LA county alone are often undocumented Latino immigrants and as such are often unaware of their workers’ rights and protections. Brave New Films sought to change this through impactful media. BNF worked with community-based organizations to reach low-wage and immigrant workers with bilingual/bicultural educational outreach to help them identify workplace hazards. We also helped them raise awareness of their rights to improve health and safety. We rose public awareness through local media and state-wide efforts, including Spanish-language press, to help drive employer compliance and agency enforcement.
