The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals just upheld a law in Florida that forbids doctors from talking to patients about gun safety – a clear infringement on doctors’ first amendment rights and their ability to care for the health of patients.
In 2011, NRA backed legislation called the "Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act" officially made it a crime in Florida for a doctor to ask patients if they own guns and advise them on safe practices.
Now that this legislation has been upheld in the second highest court in the nation, we need to take it to the highest- the U.S. Supreme Court - to show not only that this law is ridiculous and puts public safety in jeopardy, but this law is unconstitutional!
Upholding this type of terrible law in Florida sets a precedent and encourages other states to pass similar laws.
Guns are a public health crisis in America. Doctors are the most trusted sources for health advice; they should be allowed to talk to patients about guns and basic gun safety.
We demand the Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court so it can be overturned!
