Prison Profiteers
Brave New Films produced PRISON PROFITEERS as a new media and public education campaign dedicated to raising awareness about private prisons and the companies that profit huge sums of money while tax payers, inmates, and inmates’ families are stuck with high costs to service 2.3 million people incarcerated in the United States. When corporations seek to profit from prisons, it creates a powerful financial incentive, not just to push for policies that fuel mass incarceration but to cut corners in the services they’ve been hired to provide.
Supported by Herb Block and the Ford Foundation, our PRISON PROFITEERS series aimed and succeeded in:
-
Working with national organizations—the ACLU and The Nation—to reach the progressive base on the issues of mass incarceration by focusing on the profiteering angle and show the bigger picture of prison-industrial complexes beyond just private prisons.
-
Raising public awareness through our members, email outreach, and via the audiences of our campaign partners.
-
Impacting major statewide media markets to drive awareness and public education.
