Distorted Democracy: The Fight Against Gerrymandering/ Suppressed: The Fight to Vote
Distorted Democracy: The Fight Against Gerrymandering is a short film directed by Juan Yepes. In our democracy, every voice should be heard, and every vote should count equally. But in North Carolina and other states across the country, politicians are choosing their voters instead of the other way around. Voters were silenced in North Carolina when politicians gerrymandered the state during the redistricting process.
The screening is sponsored by Puffin Foundation, Ltd. and the League of Women Voters of Teaneck
Suppressed: The Fight to Vote is a short film directed by Robert Greenwald. Voter suppression has become one of the biggest dangers of American elections. During the 2018 midterm elections, millions of voters experienced suppression ranging from voter purges, to poll closures, to long lines of over 4 hours, to strict voter ID issues that disproportionately block Brown and Black citizens from their constitutional right to vote. This is an emotionally gripping look at Georgias election involving Stacey Abrams with compelling and irrefutable evidence of suppression.
The screening is sponsored by Puffin Foundation, Ltd., the League of Women Voters of Teaneck, and Bergen County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Following the screenings, there will be a talkback with director of Distorted Democracy Juan Yepes.
Teaneck International Film Festival draws over 3,000 filmgoers each year. Films and talkbacks illustrate what TIFF is about – making untouchable topics part of everyday conversation by addressing racism, oppression, the environment, the LGBTQ community, women’s concerns, immigration -- stories of the little guy whose story is not often heard. With the theme, Activism: Making Change, the festival is an excellent starting point for fostering appreciation of differences, understanding all that we share, and encouraging efforts to help make the world a better place.
