In March 2016, Brave New Films, Daily Kos, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Newtown Action Alliance, Women Against Gun Violence, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and many other groups delivered over 200,000 petition signatures to Congress urging them to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) by passing the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act (H.R. 4399/S. 2469). PLCAA provides unique and unprecedented legal protections to the gun industry, shielding gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers from lawsuits when they engage in negligent behavior that causes harm to average Americans.
The petition delivery was a success—and has led to new Members of Congress signing onto H.R. 4399/S. 2469 as cosponsors! But we need to keep the pressure up in order to ensure that the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act advances through the appropriate committees and to the floor of the House and Senate for a vote.
