House Committee Holds Rove in Contempt!

The campaign to Send Karl Rove to Jail just won a major victory this morning.  The House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Rove in contempt by a 20-14 vote, and it was your efforts that made this a reality!

Just 12 days ago, we were pointing out Rove's arrogance and blatant disregard for the law when we launched our video and petition drive.  But in the last week-and-a-half, you raised over 127,000 signatures, 40,000 of which came within the first 24 hours.

This fervor attracted other progressive groups to our cause, including CREDO Mobile, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, The Nation, Campaign for America's Future, Progress Now, and People for the American Way.  And each organization helped gather more signatures for our list—CREDO Mobile and PFAW added tens of thousands of names alone.

The petition drive culminated yesterday, when I headed down to DC in the blistering heat to hand-deliver three boxes worth of signatures to Capitol Hill.  Together with Drew Courtney of PFAW and Isaiah Poole of CAF, we took our message to HJC member Linda Sanchez (D-CA), crowding into Sanchez's  Longworth House office surrounded by press and congressional staffers.

Sanchez, who has been a true leader in the fight to hold Rove in contempt, was visibly impressed by the sheer number of signatures.  "I think it's ridiculous that Karl Rove thinks that he doesn't have to follow the law," Sanchez told me.  "And nobody in this country should be above the law."  Judging from today's HJC ruling, Sanchez was as good as her word.

Just think of what today's decision today will mean.  Until now, Rove's been lying and avoiding questions about his involvement in leaking Valerie Plame's identity, the politicization of the Justice Department, and the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.  Just look at his written denials to ranking HJC member Lamar Smith (R-TX), when he refrained from denying that he spoke to longtime confidant Bill Canary, who links Rove to the Siegelman prosecution.  Rove has also claimed immunity and touted executive privilege, which doesn't apply in this case

Now that the decision to hold Rove in contempt will move from the HJC to the full House, however, Rove could be forced to testify under oath or face jail time.  That's where you come in.  Keep pressuring your elected officials to hold lawbreakers like Rove accountable.  Keep contributing to Brave New Films so we can remain ever vigilant in this battle.  And keep signing and passing along those petitions, because they obviously can make an impact.

Keep the pressure on and keep the faith. This may be the time the government does the right thing. We have to believe it or we will fail.

  2. DaleZ says:

This is just the begining. This administration must be held responsible for the crimes against the constitution they have committed. This includes the President and Vice-President. Bush must be held accountable. He should leave office in disgrace as did Nixon. He must not be allowed to leave office triumphantly and pardon his comrades in corruption.

  3. Suzie H says:

We can’t let them just leave office with an impeachment (Bush and Cheney). That’s getting off too easy. They need to be charged with War Crimes, among other things, and serve the rest of their lives in prison!

  4. J D says:

What would go nicely with this is the voting status of all who voted. It would further bolster who is against accountability.

  5. Chuck says:

I agree Suzie, but Dumbya will never spend time in jail. Look at the deal his daughter made with the Paraguay Gov. to protect war criminals. This was right after he purchased 900K acres there.

  6. Andy says:

Sadly none of these scumbags will be brought to justice,Bush will pardon all and the next president will take care of w and who ever is left.If any of them receive justice it will be from an out side source. It sure would be nice to see Rove in Handcuffs though.

  7. Andrea says:

Why is Nancy Pelosi the one who gets to make this decision? What’s up with her anyway? Who gave her the right to take impeachment off the table? Just hold him in contempt and get it over with. Even if nothing happens until Bush is gone. JUST DO IT!!

  8. Kanuk25 says:

They won’t hold anyone in contempt of Congress because they hold the voters in contempt. Bush/Cheney et al would never be impeached, tried at the Hague or go to prison in the US for their crimes. The status quo has to be maintained.

They will retire with a huge boondoggle from the very voters they screwed over the years. How ironic..

  9. Mitchell Stein says:

It’s a shame that this will likely be a hollow victory, as Bush will most certainly pardon his crony in crime. These lowlifes deserve to share a prison cell for many decades, but we’ll unfortunately never get that satisfaction (not if Nancy Pelosi has anything to say about it; she’s already proved she’s utterly spineless when it comes to calling these cretins to task for their crimes).

I’m taking a wait-and-see attitude, but at least we can congratulate ourselves for doing the right thing even if our so-called president never has nor will. I know I’m not alone in counting the minutes until Bush’s reign of terror is finally over; he and his partners in crime have disgraced this country and the office of the president for far too long. It’s too bad there are so many mindless sheep in this country (just the fact that McCain has as much support as he does proves this point), but I hope that reason and civility will ultimately win over intimidation and contempt for the laws of this country.

  10. Don Rettmann says:

It’s great that the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Rove in contempt. But, it will lead to nothing. The Democratic leadership is too scared out of their wits to really hold Bush and his cronies accountable.

Bush lied to justify his invasion of Iraq. It was all about oil. Cheney held those secret meetings with energy executives prior to the invasion, and no doubt promised them Iraq’s oil. The discussions at those meetings are still kept secret, and the Democrats are too spineless to demand accountability of that, too.

American soldiers have died and been gravely wounded for nothing but Bush’s and Cheney’s lies and greed. The soldiers’ sacrifice, as well as the sacrifice of their loved ones, have been for nothing.

Bush and Cheney must be held accountable. Their crimes have been unimaginable, and pure evil.

Every individual normally has a savings account in one or the other bank, be it a private bank or a public sector bank. Through years kennett national bank of transactions through this bank account, a sense of mutual understanding and a bond of trust tend to develop between them. As a result, the customer is quite likely to approach the same institution for a bank mortgage as well. Each financial institution has a different policy that is governed by a set of rules and regulations to be followed as stated by law. As such the scheme details of all these institutions are much the same. In most cases, it is the quality of service and the facilities provided that becomes the basis of your choice. For instance, if you have maintained an account in a particular bank for a certain time period, you would be aware of the type and quality of service offered. You are, therefore, well informed and thus, can take the right decision in this regard. Likewise, the bank is also aware of your financial health and conduct and the management too can take a better decision while considering and sanctioning a bank mortgage application. Before signing any papers, make sure to read the bank mortgage contract very well.
