House Committee Holds Rove in Contempt!

The campaign to Send Karl Rove to Jail just won a major victory this morning.  The House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Rove in contempt by a 20-14 vote, and it was your efforts that made this a reality!

Just 12 days ago, we were pointing out Rove's arrogance and blatant disregard for the law when we launched our video and petition drive.  But in the last week-and-a-half, you raised over 127,000 signatures, 40,000 of which came within the first 24 hours.

This fervor attracted other progressive groups to our cause, including CREDO Mobile, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, The Nation, Campaign for America's Future, Progress Now, and People for the American Way.  And each organization helped gather more signatures for our list—CREDO Mobile and PFAW added tens of thousands of names alone.

The petition drive culminated yesterday, when I headed down to DC in the blistering heat to hand-deliver three boxes worth of signatures to Capitol Hill.  Together with Drew Courtney of PFAW and Isaiah Poole of CAF, we took our message to HJC member Linda Sanchez (D-CA), crowding into Sanchez's  Longworth House office surrounded by press and congressional staffers.

Sanchez, who has been a true leader in the fight to hold Rove in contempt, was visibly impressed by the sheer number of signatures.  "I think it's ridiculous that Karl Rove thinks that he doesn't have to follow the law," Sanchez told me.  "And nobody in this country should be above the law."  Judging from today's HJC ruling, Sanchez was as good as her word.

Just think of what today's decision today will mean.  Until now, Rove's been lying and avoiding questions about his involvement in leaking Valerie Plame's identity, the politicization of the Justice Department, and the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.  Just look at his written denials to ranking HJC member Lamar Smith (R-TX), when he refrained from denying that he spoke to longtime confidant Bill Canary, who links Rove to the Siegelman prosecution.  Rove has also claimed immunity and touted executive privilege, which doesn't apply in this case

Now that the decision to hold Rove in contempt will move from the HJC to the full House, however, Rove could be forced to testify under oath or face jail time.  That's where you come in.  Keep pressuring your elected officials to hold lawbreakers like Rove accountable.  Keep contributing to Brave New Films so we can remain ever vigilant in this battle.  And keep signing and passing along those petitions, because they obviously can make an impact.

  5. Bill says:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! It is time to see some backbone from the Americans who KNOW what has been going on for over 8 years from this gentleman. I am ready to take to the streets regarding this matter. Enough is enough.

  6. aharlib says:

Is this mere contempt that has no teeth, or INHERENT contempt with the power to jail offenders?

  7. Bet nothing happens to Rove. What is it you don’t get? America has been infiltrated by the enemy of the Constitution. We are not a sovereign country. We are a corporation. No doubt you are making millions on your videos but it will take a REVOLUTION to get our country back.

  8. ImMadAsHellAndI'mNotGoingToTakeItAnymore! says:

This administration has served the American People with lies, corruption, war and death in the name of greed and self interest. Now, let the American People serve them with subpoenas and warrants to answer for these crimes.

Everybody say it! Let me here it!

I’m Mad As Hell And I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore! Go ahead, say it!

I’m Mad As Hell And I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore!

    It feels good doen’t it!

  9. Steve says:

THANK YOU, Brave New Films, for your efforts to see that Karl Rove is not allowed to side-step the law. It should be very interesting to see what spin Fox News puts on this story…if it is even reported.

  10. james B. Hopkins says:

    Awesome!
    Spread the news!
    Hold these criminals accountable

  11. Barbara Roberts says:

HALLELUJAH!!!!!One giant step for accountability and respect for the law!!!!!

  12. Garry says:

Get a life! You still are going after a dead horse…Bush will be leaving soon and we will have a new socialist in office, most likely Obama. He will punge our country into darkness by raising taxes and doing away with most of the Bill of Rights. I know..pat answer is that he will only raise taxes on the RICH! well, Im not rich and everytime the Democrats raise Taxes on the Rich, I the lower middle class take the hit!!!
So Get a life and see America for what it really is..a country that other people from other countries are trying hard to get in. If you like the Eurpean system of government then move there because their people are lining up to get into ours. So again..Get a life!!

  13. Linda Langman says:

It is time for “we the people” to take back our democracy. Put Rove in jail for treason, not just contempt!

  14. Nick says:

Good news. Hopefully this is just one small step towards Congress exercising more of its checks against the executive branch. I’m not a fan of any government entity, usually, but I’d rather they keep each other accountable instead of harming us people. I doubt this will have much impact in any real court except the one of “public opinion,” but that’s often the most important one anyway.

  15. Rachel Ben-Avi says:

Good. Now, how about the rest of them, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al? War crimes, lots of them. Go get ‘em…

  16. Ernest C says:

Get real, Garry! Just because the abomination known as the Bush regime will hopefully come to an end, we are supposed to ignore the crimes against our constitution, our people, the people of Iraq and the rule of law? There is a word that describes what Brave New Films, the many who signed the petition to hold Rove in contempt and now the House Judiciary Committee have done–Justice!

  17. Teresa says:

Right on! The guy deserves some serious jail time (I wonder how they’d like him in prison??) as does the rest of the Bush Administration, including and espeically Bush. He should be tried for Treason. It’s humilitaing for me to know that not only was Karl Rove from Utah, he even went to the same high school I did. Ugghhhh!

  18. Larry says:

To Garry who can’t spell very well for a rich Republican.

What an idiot. George Bush and his gang have already plunged this country into darkness. Are you blind? We are on the verge of economic destruction because of the greed and self interest of this administration. If you weren’t a rich Republican you would notice that. The rest of us are struggling with the costs of gas, food, housing, medical bills and insurance to cover our families. Apparently, you aren’t. Looks like you already “have a life” while others suffering around you goes unnoticed or you blame them for their own suffering. What an idiot.

I’m Made As Hell And I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore.

    Apparently, you’re not.

Your just mad because the Republican Greed Machine is coming to an end and you might have to pay higher taxes ’cause you’re rich. Boo Hoo!

  19. Chuck says:

To gary– by not holding criminals accountable for their actions is condoning it. Because this adminstration has well played a stall card doesn’t make it right. If you wish to help preserve the Constitution and it’s form of checks and balances, you would not consider this a dead horse. I suggest you get away from repeating what you see on fox news. Maybe read a book on what sacrafices our fore fathers experienced to give this Constitution for us to protect. I have a life, one sworn to Uphold and Protect our Constitution.

  20. Alan says:

(singing to the tune of Orange Blossom Special)

I hear the train a-comin’! It’s comin’ ’round the bend.
His time is here, it’s mighty clear to justice he’s no friend
He needs some time in lock-up
    No amnesty, no bail.
    It’s the Turd Blossom Special
    Carryin’ Karl Rove to jail

  21. NeedtoKnow says:

Well done! Now what? Shall we keep drumming up momentum for this petition so it can be submitted to Speaker Pelosi to force her to bring it to the floor? Also should we have a similar petition to the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senator Leahy?

Seems there’s not much time with the Congress due to adjourn.

  22. Kenneth Bravehawk says:

It is so good to hear that at least one crook if going to be held accountable for his crimes against America. Now, it’s on to Bush and Cheney and hold them accountable for the crimes they have committed against this country. How can you NOT hav e them arrested and put in prison for muder and acting against the co0nstitution.

  23. Larry says:

    Alan

    “:^] “:^} “:^j “|^)) “;^D “;^D) “x^D))

    Very good!

I’m Mad As Hell And I’m Not Going To Take It Anymore!

    But that waaaas funny!

  24. Rove will not be accountable. There will be an ‘event’, and military law will be imposed on the USA. The time of the rapture is at hand.

  25. I want to encourage people to go to the Yahoo/AP news stories & click Buzz It Up so this story will move up in the headlines.

  26. Rob Tierney says:

    To Garry

It was the Republicans who ignored the Constitution with the pre-emptive invasion of a nation that posed no threat to us, who decided that there should be prisons out of US jurisdiction, who passed the “Patriot Act,” the most unpatriotic piece of legislation in my lifetime, who decided that dissent is equivolent to treason, who decided that the Constitution is just “a g*******d piece of paper.” I am a veteran with a National Defense Medal, and I love my country, as well as the Constitution. If you feel that these crimes by the current administration are just “beating a dead horse,” then I suggest that you are not a true patriot, and would suggest that YOU go to a country that pratices your form of patriotism–North Korea, or mainland China. America–love it or leave it, pal.

  27. J Browne says:

Dare I hope that the most heinous figure ever to befoul the American political system, the man who deliberately and surgically divided the American electorate and turned it against itself purely for the sake of accumulating and solidifying political power, the cretin who infected every question or issue about the public weal with partisan politics, the conscience-less minion of Satan who took glee in attempting to destroy any one in the political arena who had the audacity to hold an opinion differing from him and the Bush team, may be brought to justice? Is it naive and foolish to hope?

  28. Fernando Quijano says:

Hope this bimbo will be put in jail, but, knowing what I know about politics, he will be pardon by his master president Bush. Then, GWB and all his buddies will live happyly ever after…………..The end.

  29. Pastbeingfeed-up says:

I for getting all the facts in line, wait until Bush leaves office (Jan 20,09) then prosecute all of them and put them in prison. If we act too fast Bush will issue pardons and they will all walk! Remember “Scotter” (the criminal) Libby. He is a free man due to a Bush pardon. I feel sorry for idiots like Garry, the autocratic Bush administration has taken away freedoms, destroyed our economy, cost the lives of up to one million people including over 4,000 of our brave military members and he still loves the tyrant. To trash Obama before he even begins his Presidency is proof Garry’s insanity and blind allegiance to the worst administration in our nation’s history.
Garry go live somewhere else yourself, you don’t deserve to live here!

  30. julia says:

    Yes treason!!
Try them all for treason and put them in Guantanamo Bay to see how they like that experience!
Imagine, young men get put in jail for years for selling a few drugs on the streets.. What do these contemtuos bastards, our leaders deserve?!

  31. JoAnn Hansen says:

No One could be happier to see Karl Rove get his. Now for the rest of them. However, a critique of the film. The audio is poor–I can not understand most of what is being said. This is often a problem with your films. Not in this case, but sometimes the audio is overlayed with music–don’t do that, makes it very difficult to understand. And watch out for total stupidity–I’ve seen McCain as Dr Strangelove–that one should have never been aired.

  32. Jim Broadwell says:

    For Garry:
Get real – It was your Republican friends who brought us three record deficits (which can only be paid by taxation) in part through an unnecessary war – the borrow and spend Republicans. It was your Republican Friends who are trashing the Bill of Rights – Unreasonable search and seizure through the Patriot act and the suspension of Habeas Corpus. It is your Republican friends who are single-handedly rewriting the Constitution – The President has two choices when a bill arrives on his desk – sign it into law, or return it to Congress with his objections. No “signing statements” no deciding whether he is going to enforce it. The Constitution says he must enforce the laws as written. It is your Republican friends who are abrogating long held international treaties unilaterally – the Geneva Convention. As a Vietnam Vet, and son of a WWII POW, I know that adherence to that treaty protects our soldiers from torture and mistreatment.
I think that regaining the moral high ground is job one for this country.

  33. Bob Hauser says:

A point well taken…that if Rove gets sentenced to the slammer, Bush will just pardon him so we should wait until Bush leaves office…problem is, if Bush is allowed to come nonchalontly strutting down the White House steps on the morning of January 20th, 2009, with a smug look on his face and openly gloating to himself about how he spent the last eight years sodomizing the American people bow-leggedand wiping his derriere with the pages of the Constitution, the entire world will hate our guts even more than now…and they will be justified. I say we ring up flank speed with impeachment against Bush/Cheney as war criminals, oath violating traitors and IMPOSTERS—which will auromatically NULLIFY all of Bush’s Executive Orders and pardons and all other ultra vires legislation with his signature on it. We can’t afford to wait any longer—we need to knock his empire down now before he declares martial law and starts pushing red buttons. Bush knows where he can go with his XOs and his “pardons” and what he can do with them when he gets down there.

  34. Glenna Jones-Kachtik says:

    Gary,
Let me put this in terms that you might be able to understand. Let’s say there is a man who steals you blind, takes your farm, rapes your women and then is protected by executive privlidge or diplomatic imunity. Would you still be willing to say that it is whipping a dead horse? I am willing to bet you would want justice. Karl Rove was dirty. McCain may or may not be and Obama may or may not be – but Rove definitly is and Bush has protected him at every turn. All most of the American public wants is justice to be served and I don’t care who it is – NO ONE SHOULD BE ABOVE THE LAW!
Vote against Obama if you want but Karl Rove is no angel and he deserves to be tried for the crimes he committed against the American people.

  35. Kory NcFarland says:

It is easy to lose hope after seeing the extreme abuses of the last 7 3/4 Years, under the Cheney/Bush Kabal. If You want accountability, then Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Pearle, John Bolton, Douglas Feith,Elliot Abrahams,Jeb Bush, John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney and the rest of the Members of
” The Project for a New American Century “, should be brought before the House Judiciary Committee. These Guy’s bunkered down in D.C. during Clinton’s Presidential Term and wrote an Agenda to Take over the United States in what they call a ” Change of Government “, of C.O.G.
One of the first on Their Lists was to invade Iraq ans Seize Iraqs Oil Fields. Paul Wolfowitz Wrote,” All We need in a Catalyzing Event Like A new Pearl Harbor, to Rally the American People behind a War”. Then came 9-11. Google PNAC, or \
“The Project For a New American Century”. Knowledge is power and We must make sure these People are held accountable for their Crimes Against The American People, and The Iraqi People as well. These People went after Our Constitution, Our Freedom and Our Way of Life. They must be held accountable.

as well as Bush, Cheney, Addington, Rice,

  36. Carey Stronach says:

For purposes of electability if nothing else, Barack Obama’s choice for a running mate should be a popular Democratic Southern governor. If Rove hadn’t pulled his slimy dirt the obvious choice would have been – Don Siegelman! So Rove’s dirt has already diminished the chances of the Democrats winning the White House. Rove knew exactly what he was doing, and he should pay the consequences.

  37. Craig Sipple says:

Believe it when I see it. Fingers crossed though

  38. leoburg9 says:

I’m not much of one for justice for as Arlo says, “Justice is for the faint of heart.” I’ve been wondering why its spelt “just ice?” But we must hear what Rove knew.

  39. John says:

Kory, Your comment speaks the truth. These people including Karl Rove conspired to commit fraud on Congress and the American People.Let the Impeachment hearings begin.Thank You Linda Sanchez!

  40. John says:

I don’t believe there is such a word as “spelt”.

  41. Dictionary says:

There absolutely is a word such as spelt. Follow this link … dictionary.reference.com

    Regards

  42. dk says:

Good sign… but will the full House ratify it? And will it take action when Rove ignores it all again at White House prompting? Oh, and how do we feel about the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee voting to give the telecoms retroactive immunity on the new FISA rewriting of the law? Respect for the law and the Constitution won’t return if the full House holds Rove in contempt but it might be a start if backed up by action.

  43. Michael Banks says:

In Canada we would have had these people in jail a long time ago. Scoundrels like that would be sent to the far North tied by their ankles to dogsleds and dragged and put on ice flows. Karl Rove at least 10 years in prison. George Bush taken to La Haye and tried for war crimes. Also take away their passports so that way thay cannot come to Canada , not even for a visit we do not need that type of pollution. Merci, et Bonne Chance to the our American friends who beleive in Justice.

  44. Pam says:

Great work to the team getting atrocities out in the open!

And now, if we can find out if he is one of the many organized criminals involved in microchipping the unwitting and non-consenting in order to have been used as human experiments and targets of electronic weapons, and the TORTURE OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS etc, that would be great.

Please consult Peter Phillips from Sonoma State University, and many thousands of others, for facts about electronic weapons, electromagnetic weapons, and TORTURE of innocent civilians in this covert war going on under your noses on countless numbers of our citizens.

    Thank you,

  45. Les D Smith says:

    Wonderful! Wonderful!
I am turning 60 this December and the things that I have seen happen during this current administration… have been nothing less than “shameless!” I have 5 children and 3 grandkids, that are now growing up in a world that Bush and his criminal cronies, have created. However, I truly feel that it reaches back much further, than this Bush Sham! ( What an IDIOT!”)
The Kennedy assassination/ Johnson was “hell bent,” on being President of the United States. ( can you say… “cover-up?) These”reality bites” that have been progressive foisted upon an unsuspecting and unwanting population literally disrupt society, en’ masse! (this may be the wrong word, so, how about “trauma based terror” a form of mind control/advertising ) Ok, Such a “red herring!”
Now that you have trashed the minds of a Nation,..
Oh, let’s not forget the 911 “lies” and cover-up! “Let the Games Begin!!”most people, by the time these events reach saturation in society, have had thier clear thought processes, “Fd” with! Now, the politicians get thier way! Agenda, Agenda, Agenda! Iran Iran Iran. No mystery to me!
Now,.. as far as the master of deceit and architect of disaster, Rove, is concerned…
I pray that, this time, the people who have taken the time,.. and care enough about what is happening to sign the petition, will have the satisfaction of seeing what can be accomplished through determination and sheer will! “Power to the people!” If as many of us see our power, as just that…POWER,… we can use this power for good.
In closing,..I would like to thank Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and all of the brilliant minds that have created the tools. The advent of the internet keeps us tied and commonly bonded enough to augment the will of the people. (generalization) Yes, the internet has the greatest potential yet, to get this country back to Constitutional principles that have stood and kept us alive and kicking or over 200 years…Now.. this allows this kind of thing to happen…
Bill, glad you made all that money! Thanks also for your giving back!
I am personally involved in “Green Energy” and hope that I, too, will be able to do some good for all! To anyone who took time to finish this lengthy expression, Ny thanks to you!… You have to be concerned (or mildly entertained) to read this far!
    Les Smith Las Vegas, Nevada

  46. tnsean615 says:

I can’t agree more with the people on here that believe the entire administration should be behind bars, even people like powell who could have stopped their evil schemes in their tracks but decided to become corrupt or do nothing.Bush now point’s his fat finger at the democratic congress,to blame them for high gas prices. The oil man had 8 yrs. to do something such as a domestic gas tax that would come back to us,require vehicles to be made or imported that had little to no pollution, with high mpg.Funding for research of electric cars like the EV-1 that GM had but decided to sale their patent to chevron and crush the ones they did have, check out who killed the electric car.Are government and this administration failed us horribly,it’s a sad time,we the people will be the only ones who can turn all this crap around.

  47. Snowball's Revenge says:

Rove is just one administrative pig from the Animal Farm. We need to pressure the new adminsitration to go after each of the servile fascists that served both Bush regimes. If the new administration doesn’t investigate and hold these fascist pigs accountable for their actions, then it is time for some serious barn burning!

  48. ozogg says:

    Hey Guys,

How about, at some appropriate time, starting a campaign for “Send Dubya to jail”?

His list of crimes, both international & national, are well known – no one needs to list them again.

    How about it?

  49. Norman Erlichman says:

I will believe it when I see it! So far I suspect that it will be another form of sabre rattling, Rove will thumb his nose at the spineless Congress and Bush et al will find a way to weasel out of any complicity or responsibility. I find it difficult to believe all of the, at least, quasi-criminal behaviors they have carried out without anyone being willing or able to put a stop to them or answer for their alleged crimes.

  50. Rosa Fang says:

Let us keep the pressure on congress and senate,so we can undo the damages Bush administration had done to our constitution.
