Background

Brave New Films (BNF) is a non-profit 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organization founded in 2005 that creates social-justice-oriented film and video projects.  We distribute content via social media, in classrooms, and through collaborations and screenings with partner organizations.  We have a staff of 23 people, with offices in Culver City, CA.

We offer full benefits including healthcare with fully paid premiums, hiatus, vacation, sick pay, family/maternity/paternity leave all housed in a re-purposed dog-friendly old motel with hummingbirds in the courtyard in always sunny downtown Culver City, CA.

Job Summary

The BNF Programs Director oversees the Outreach Department and is responsible for managing the screenings programs at BNF, including Brave New Educators (BNE), which reaches over 1500 classrooms nationwide.

Candidates should have a strong understanding of social issues, a background or experience in education, and a passion for engaging with a diverse range of people.

They should also possess a firm belief in the power of film to influence social change as well as strong motivational and managerial skills to lead a team.

This position is based in Los Angeles and cannot be worked remotely. 

Responsibilities

  • Create strategies to expand BNF screenings for
  • Advocacy organizations and community groups
  • Schools and classrooms (Brave New Educators program)
  • Develop reliable relationships with organizations, groups, schools, and teachers for screenings and development of outreach strategies
  • Evaluate effectiveness and impact of outreach strategies
  • Cultivate extensive contact lists of organizations, groups, and teachers for screenings outreach
  • Oversee screenings launches:
  • Use new, upcoming, and previously released material to create impactful film packages for screenings program
  • Create a calendar of screenings program releases
  • Develop educational discussion guides for film packages
  • Develop and implement outreach plans for releases
  • Coordinate with Supervising Producer to secure video assets
  • Coordinate with Operations Manager to schedule email communication and create website assets
  • Coordinate with Executive Director to incorporate recommended social actions to film packages
  • Manage outreach staff, including interns and fellows, providing leadership and guidance
  • Develop and implement effective strategies for generating feedback from screenings
  • Work with development team to provide data and feedback for campaign impact reports
  • Establish, track, and deliver goals for screenings totals annually and for individual film packages
  • Oversee screenings registration processes
  • Evaluate and improve registration intake
  • Maintain records of screenings and host engagement
  • Provide prompt communication and support to screening hosts and educators
  • Stay up-to-date on current events on BNF-related subject matter—including all new, upcoming, and previously released material
  • Act as BNF representative for speaking, panelist, and discussion moderator engagements
  • Provide support for special events and premieres

 

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience working in social justice related outreach
  • Experience working with teachers, schools, and/or educational organizations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Candidates should be responsible, dependable, organized, deadline-oriented and creative
  • Should be able to manage own time, establish schedules and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to motivate a team and thrive in a collaborative work environment
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and written/verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented, capable of multi-tasking; self-directed with proven ability to prioritize tasks
  • Must be resourceful, adaptable, and able to work in a fast-paced, quick-turnaround environment
  • Familiarity with Vimeo, and YouTube preferred; Nationbuilder a huge plus
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative suite (InDesign and Photoshop) a plus
  • Familiarity using a CRM/CMS for coms, contacts and event scheduling preferred

  2. Cover letter telling us about yourself and why you would be a good fit for this job
  3. Pick any three Brave New Films films (available at www.bravenewfilms.org), either short or full-length.  Write a paragraph on each one geared toward college educators/professors, encouraging them to use the film in their class.  Describe for them the overall Brave New Educators program, including the study guides we provide.  Explain the value to them and their students.  Do the same (a paragraph on each film) for a second audience:  high school teachers.   Do the same (a paragraph on each film) for a third audience:  activist/issue-oriented groups.
  4. Write a short (4-5 paragraph) proposal about how you would expand the Brave New Educators program – how you would spend your time (and supervise others’ time) to reach more potential teachers, professors and administrators. Do the same (4-5 paragraphs) for expanding BNF’s reach to activist groups.
  5. Record and submit a short (up to 2 minutes) MP4 audio of your approach on the phone to a teacher (high school or college level), encouraging them to use BNF films for their class.
